I struggled with the concept of this project immensely. And while I managed to push through the conflicting thoughts I had about my work, I still think the end result looks pretty mediocre. The key idea about metamorphosis is to show at least six steps of change... however, that doesn't mean there has to be six separate pictures or transitions, which is what I had a problem with understanding. At first, I was going to paint a woman morphing into a wolf, then a flamenco dancer's skirt morphing into fire, and finally, I decided to take my own spin on a picture I found on Pinterest; it was a drawing of a rib cage morphing into feathers. To make my piece different, I scrapped the feather in the middle and painted a backbone, and I decided to paint a woman's head and have her skin deteriorate into muscle. Overall, I think it could have been executed better, but I'm content with how it turned out - considering how much I struggled with my decision in the beginning. I struggled the most with the value of the feathers and working with the negative space instead of the positive. The values in this piece were a bit tricky, because everything except for the face was monochromatic, so I had to be sure not to go too dark with the beginning of my piece so I could have the background be the darkest aspect of the work. I used watercolor pencils along with watercolor paint to paint her muscles, and I like the depth and value that the pencils gave the tissue. If I could change one thing about my painting, it would be to make the value of the feathers lighter.
