Francis BaconFrancis Bacon was an artist in the early 1900s whose main inspiration stemmed from surrealism. His artworks focused particularly on the grotesque aspect of life's objects. These particular works caught my eye because of their uniqueness. I truly love the style of his portraits because they are semi-realistic. His portrait of the man has a faraway look to it, which I am particularly drawn to. There aren't many details, but there is a clear evidence of depth to the painting. I am also fond of his work titled "Study of a Nude" because of its fluidity and simplicity. Both of these paintings seem to be done with acrylic or oil paint on canvas. Jean-Michel BasquiatJean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist in the late 1900s who was well known for his street art and producing suggestive dichotomies that told a story. I am fond of the child-like feeling I receive when I view Basquiat's work. The vibrant colors in this piece and the arrangement of facial features are what drew me to this image. This painting gives me a Mardi Gras vibe, because of the colors and style. I am also intrigued by the detail put into the face and background, and how he incorporated his name onto the nose of the figure in writing. The medium looks to be either acrylic or oil on canvas, with pen or ink additionally. As with the work above, the painting to the right also caught my eye because of Basquiat's creative use of color and line. I love the mood of this painting; it feels a bit somber. The background is also composed of an equal combination of complimentary colors to balance out the work. I believe this was painted with acrylic on canvas, with possibly the use of oil pastels.
